I am not coordinated. I have difficulty clapping to a beat. But I gave Contra, Waltz, English, and a few other dances a shot during Camper’s Week, which is a dance-heavy session where campers lead all the programming.
In most folk dances, there’s a caller at the front of the band that walks the dancers through a set of repeating steps. Kind of like a coxswain calling the rhythm and technical adjustments of their rowers. When the song progresses and dancers become more familiar with the steps, the caller provides fewer cues. I can’t remember the name of this contra dance, but it was the last dance of session and a spirited close to Camper’s Week.

Having observed a variety of dance styles during this week, it seemed the English dances were less “swingy” as they are in Contra, and more about technical footwork. The clapping in the middle of this dance was a fun element.
